Here’s the unexpected star from California who’s competing for awards at the 2019 AMAs

Remember when Justin Bieber was a teen heartthrob with a nearly unbeatable amount of chart-topping talent? That was about 10 years ago, and it’s clear that the pop star has been working his magic and honing his craft ever since.

On Wednesday, Bieber kicked off the American Music Awards on ABC and immediately solidified his place as one of music’s titans. But don’t let his powerhouse performance from earlier that night fool you — Bieber’s got nothing to be humble about, because the pop star is only just warming up. He’s been nominated in three categories at the 2019 AMAs, and he’s won four times already, including three Grammy awards, two Brit Awards and one MTV Video Music Award.

It’s rare to find a lesser-known pop star with Bieber’s star power, but that’s what Olivia Rodrigo is right now. The 19-year-old from Modesto, California, has just released a self-titled debut album and is making her debut in the race for this year’s coveted award show.

Rodrigo is nominated for favorite adult contemporary artist and “favorite female pop/rock artist,” and her track “Don’t Stop” has been nominated for three awards: favorite female pop/rock song, favorite pop/rock song and fan-voted favorite pop/rock song.

Rodrigo joins Bieber among the other top-nominated artists at the 2019 AMAs: Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Drake, Drake, Cardi B, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, and Imagine Dragons. The AMAs will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, on ABC.
