    Description

For sale is a antique Witherell axe head, weighing 3lbs.1.4ounces. Signed "Witherell"{1st & 2nd pictures}, "3-1/4"{6th picture}, and "44"{10th picture}, it measures 6-1/2" long with a 4-3/4" wide edge, a 1-7/16" wide X 3-1/8" poll, or end, and a 3/4" X 2-1/2" eye. The edge is good, with some slight roughness, and will respond well to honing and sharpening by a experienced hand. The poll shows use and wear, as pictured. There are no personal inscriptions from previous owners. This is a nice overall example from a rarely seen maker from Oakland Maine, in operation originally from 1885-1916, and later bought out by Emerson Stevens. The"44" signifies 1944 as the manufacturing date.
