Disclaimer:I made the masks and performed all bushcraft modifications. But I did not make the hatchets. They are purchased new and then reborn in my shop...
Half hatchet with handmade leather mask, or sheath, for covering the bit. These hatchets are brand new with some bushcraft modifications I did myself. The handle is made from hickory and the head is carbon steel. Don't know what flavor of carbon though. It is 14 inches total length with a 1.5 pound head that is secured by two round wedges and also a steel roll pin in the bottom of the head that goes completely through the handle and both sides of the head. I haven't knocked one loose yet...
Mods include sanding off that light-colored factory coating most axes and hatchets come with on the wood, then staining it with a darker stain, giving that bushcraft look. Then the handle is coated with my own special wax to seal and preserve it. Also I added a two-step lanyard hole with leather lanyard. I also touched up the edge a bit. I purposely do not get them "shaving" sharp, but they are much sharper than they were out of the box and cut great.
I also made the leather mask from tooling leather, hand cut and dyed, with double hand stitching using high strength artificial sinew. This is a good protective feature and the leather is very thick. Notice in the picture my design has no stitching on the business end. Mine are folded around the edge so there is no chance of the bit coming through the stitching.
I've been using one of these off and on for a while now and find them to be a great bushcraft hatchet. They split wood with authority. And carve pretty decently in a pinch... With the hammer end this is great for driving tent or tarp stakes and other tasks where a hammer would be great. But who carries a hammer... My sheath design allows the sheath to still be in place while using the hammer end.
