This unusual Cowan vase is about 7" and bears R. Guy Cowan's monogram in the center along with a shape number of 553. However, there is no shape 553 illustrated in the company's 1925-1931 catalogs, published while the studio was operating in Rocky River.
This information indicates that the piece could have been made around 1919, when the company was still operating (starting in 1912) in the town of Lakewood, not yet in Rocky River. Or perhaps it was made very soon after the relocation to Rocky River, around 1920 or 1921.
In either case, it is a rare wheel-thrown example, probably thrown by R. Guy Cowan himself. The "Sage Green" matte glaze is not known on any cast shape made in Rocky River and is not mentioned in the catalogs. Opalescent Yellow lustre is known both before and after 1919.
Condition: crazing, which is hard to see on the green portion. And the stilt marks left small chips on the foot. Both are part of the manufacturing process, which has to be thought of as experimental at this transitional time in the company's history.
