Description
CROOKSVILLE BURLEY AND WINTER POTTERY COMPANY BROWNWARE PITCHER WITH (10)MUGS. They were made between 1892 and 1915. The pitcher and mugs have a man smoking a pipe on one side and a windmill on the other. The pitcher is 8 1/2" tall and 8" from spout to handle. The mugs are 4 5/8" tall and 4 5/8" across. There are some glazing defects as there is in most pottery. I do see some crazing on a couple mugs. There are 10 mugs and a couple of them show some marking from age and usage. They are marked on the bottom with the encircled heart and Burley Winter Pottery Co. Crooksville. This item comes from an estate and looked like it has been stored away many years ago. Please see attached pictures.Burley Potteries in Crooksville, Ohio was purchased by John Burley in 1825. It burned down in 1828. It was re-built by John Burley in 1831 and operated until 1885. From 1846 to 1860 Lazalier Burley was the next Burley in line. He operated Bluebird Pottery at his home. William Burley and Wilson Winter in 1972 stated Burley and Winter. They operated it in a general store from 1876 to 1901. They made the Heart Brand stoneware. Later they made Bur-win garden ware. They made high glaze stoneware, bisque fired ware and painted. Around 1900 to 1904 Z.W. Burley and S.V. Burley, brothers began the Keystone Pottery. John G. Burley, December 1909 was incorporated by John G. Burley and the 2 sons of Wilson Winters. Approximately, around 1912 the Keystone Pottery, J.G. Burley Pottery and the Winters all merged into one plant. The plant ran until 1937 when it was liquidated. Ohio was once home to the most iconic potteries.
