Custom Vintage 1948 Sager Chemical Axe Original Reproduction with Labels
This auction is for a special axe. As listed above, this is a rare, vintage 1948 Sager Double Bit Chemical Axe that has been absolutely brought back to life.
This axe head is a genuine 1948 Sager Chemical axe head. Upon receiving it, it was thoroughly cleaned and all rust and foreign particles safely removed. It was hand polished to a mirror shine, which was several hours of work alone. The axe head was thoroughly cleaned once more with rubbing alcohol and acetone, while under medium heat to draw out impurities. The axe head was hot salt blued three separate times, thoroughly cleaning between each bluing cycle, then hand polished. After curing, the entire axe head was dipped in lacquer, following the process in which it was originally made.
The American Hickory haft was custom shaved to this particular axe head’s eye. The haft was hand sanded from 50 grit to 2000 grit, producing an absolute smooth grip. The haft was given a flamed grain treatment, sanded once more and dipped in boiled linseed oil.
The axe head was hand fit to the haft and snugly driven to the shoulders. A custom Birch wedge was crafted to perfectly fit the kerf. Boiled linseed oil and Titebond Ultimate were used to coat the wedge before it was thoroughly driven in. The wedge was cut proud 1/2 inch. There is absolutely zero play or movement in this head to haft bond.
The haft and top eye were hand rubbed with genuine Odie’s Oil and polished to a lustrous finish.
Total length of this axe from top of wedge to bottom of haft is 34 3/4 inches. The double bit axe head is 9 1/4 inches from center end to end. Each blade is 4 1/4 inches in length. Total weight is approximately 5 lbs 1.5 oz.
To finish this gorgeous axe, original, period-correct reproduction labels were custom made and affixed in the locations on the axe head where the original labels were placed in 1948.
This is a special axe here at Stunner Blades Customs. Considerable time and effort were made to make this absolute stunner of an axe. We have searched around and have not seen an axe like this on the market. So we made one for someone special out there.
