    Description

Impressive Antique Meriden Sterling Silver Double Handle Loving Cup / Trophy
Presented is a large and impressive sterling silver two handle loving cup or
trophy, by Meriden Britannia/International. This piece dates to the late 1800s
or very early 1900s. The trophy is beautifully hand chased with foliate
scrollwork decoration around the body and base, matching the little foliate
flourishes that make up the thumbpieces of the scroll-form handles. The quality
of the decoration is exceptional, the hand chasing and detailing is very crisp
and clean. The interior has a nice gold wash, so you really could fill it with
champagne if you wanted, without risking the finish of the silver. But the
capacity is listed as 10 pints (1.25 gallons/4.7 liters) so that would be a lot
    of champagne.
This piece is in great overall condition. One side has had a monogram or
inscription professionally removed, but the other side has no monograms or
removals so it could still be engraved/presented. There are no splits, no dents,
    and no repairs.
This piece is stamped sterling as well as the maker's mark for Meriden
Britannia and a product number 882. There is also a stamp for the capacity, 10
pints and the height to the rim, 14 inches.
The trophy stands about 15 inches tall at the highest point of the handles
(14” at the rim) and measures 14 1/2 inches across the handles, or about 7 1/4
inches in diameter at the mouth.
The trophy weighs 1688 grams or 59.5 regular ounces.
