    Description

A large, heavy piece of trench art shaped using brass shell casing to make the H A (Heeresverwaltung--Army administration) with heavy braided metal cable used as a backdrop decoration with a smaller aluminum disk near the bottom.  This configuration is of the shoulder board decoration of a Major Field Grade Officer in the German army.    The dedication on the back reads "herzlichste glückwünsche zur beförderung unteroffizierskorps u. mannschaften der S.S.P.117 Lemberg 6 XI 1942"  which translates to:
"Heartiest congratulations on your promotion (to) NCO Officer (Major or Sergeant equivalent) corps u. Men (of) S.S.P.117 Lemberg (Lviv, Ukraine) November 6th, 1942".  Apparently this civilian administrator was promoted to the rank of Major during the occupation of southern Poland.
This date would put this during the battle of the Caucus and the battle of Stalingrad period right near the end of Fall Blau (Case Blue) offensive.
I have yet to determine the exact meaning of S.S.P.117 although I at first thought it might be an SS Panzer division but none with that number designation exists.  A very rare one of a kind item!
Measures 23.5 inches tall by 8.5 inches wide, and weighs 6.5 pounds.
