    Description

For your consideration is this mid century modern studio pottery bust. It measures about 14" tall including it's teakwood base. This is a representation of Dionysos, Greek god of wine, the grape harvest, pleasure and festivity. The Romans also had their answer to this god, his name was Bacchus. Obviously, neither of these great civilizations wanted to miss out on this most important aspect of their society, wine and pleasure, so there was one for each. The Roman Bacchus is usually portrayed as an older man with lots of hair and a beard. The Greek version however, is a more subdued figure with grapes in his hair, best captured by Michelangelo's sculpture from 1497. The resemblance is striking. All this aside, this piece of art is a fine example of the studio pottery movement so prevalent during the 2nd half of the 20th century. While this one is not signed where it can be seen, it does present itself with great style and scale on it's teak wood base. It remains in excellent damage free condition with only a couple firing imperfections so typical in this genre. Nothing that detracts. Please study the photos and ask any questions you may have. Quoted shipping is to the lower 48 states and includes insurance. Thanks.
