    Description

Nemadji Pottery (Moose Lake MN 1920s-2002) used local clays from near the Nemadji River.  A Danish immigrant - not a Native American - thought bright designs could be made by dipping fired pieces in water swirling with simple house paint & not fired a second time.  While the name Nemadji implied that these objects Nemadji tribe handicrafts, Nemadji is just an Ojibwe word that means left-handed.  However, the implied link made these popular with tourists throughout the United States.
Early Nemadji pieces were marked "Nemadji Indian Pottery" &/or had the outline of the head of an Indian chief; pieces included a pamphlet stating these were made with the same clays & in the same shapes as pottery made by Native Americans.  In later years, references that implied these were made by Native Americans were removed from the mark.  Pottery ceased being made 2001-02.
This piece has the bottom mark "Nemadji Indian Pottery" as shown in the photo & the original pencil-marked price of .89.  It has a rough texture & obvious mold lines typical of many Nemadji pieces.  It is inches 6-1/2 inches tall, 4-1/4 inches wide at its widest point, 2 inches in diameter at the top rim, & 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the base.  It is in excellent vintage condition - no chips, hairlines, or crazing.  Ships USPS.
