This evocative sculpture measures approximately 6" t. and is marked Edris Eckhardt #19 and also FEDERAL ART PROJECT CLEVELAND. The sculptor is Cleveland School (now Institute) of Art graduate and long-time faculty member Edris Eckhardt, who also oversaw the ceramic program of the Federal Art Project (1935-1938). Created in a small edition (of no more than 50 examples at the most). Hand decorated, also by Eckhardt.
Rare opportunity to own a vintage example of a WPA era artwork by a talented and listed artist. This figure was envisioned as a way to assist teachers and librarians teaching young children to read. There were eventually six more figures related to the beloved Alice stories. This one is especially fun, as it includes Alice herself, along with the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat.
Note that the rabbit was missing his ears completely... due to the over-enthusiastic youngsters of a certain story hour? They were modeled by hand and replaced by a professional restorer years ago. There is also a minute nick on Alice's skirt, as well as several along the bottom edge (all inconspicuous).
