    THE MARINERS COMPASS
A pivoted magnetized needle set up as
a compass was described by Peter
Peregrinus of Picardy in 1269, but it
is known that the Arabs used magnets
floating in a bow! of water as a com-
pass long before this, and the Chinese
    probably knew the principles even
earlier. The compasses used by sea-
men to as late as the last century were
    crude instruments, liable to many
errors, and it was not until the turn of
the century that the inventive genius of
Lord Kelvin produced a reliable mag-
    netic compass. Nowadays most ships
compasses are of the gyro type worked
    mechanically.
