    WHY AN IRON BAR SINKS AND IRON BOAT FLOATS
    Iron in a solid lump will sink in water because its weight is greater than the weight of
    water it displaces and therefore the upward thrust of the liquid is not enough to keep it
    floating. An iron ship, however, will float because the large space inside it enables it to
    displace a much greater volume of water.
