Description
This shell was mounted sometime in the 1950s to the best of my knowledge based upon original mounted shells sold at that time that had the same stylized base as this one. I figure this was assembled by a smaller private seller that had site location access to collect these fired shells. There are no markings or identification whatsoever and these are extremely rare. The shell itself is about 6 inches tall and weighs over 7 pounds, about 10 inches overall with base. By comparison it seems to be a 57mm German Anti-Tank round. It was meant to be fired from a tank or other mobile platform at another tank. It corresponds to German WWI ordinance based on image comparison because most German rounds changed before WWII. The date may be in between wars but this round looks more like German WWI era. The deep patina and the white ring seal sell it as original to me (please see photos). The ring seal was where it mounted to the powder portion of the shell and after firing produces the white oxidation seen. There are striking reproductions but the other thing that tells me it is original is the small random impact pitting from striking something. It is hard to see but does show in the photos and it is hard to fake those. I am not an expert and make no claims or guarantee about this item. The information provided is a researched opinion by a combat veteran and price was also determined by similar rounds that are for sale, and there are not many. If you know more please contact me. Item will ship in heavy padded box for safety because of the weight. Please use the pictures as the description for this item and Thanks for Looking.
