    Description

Vintage 20L (5 Gallon) Jerry Can
    WWII Germany
    Marked....
    Treibstoff
    Feuergefährlich
Here is a brief history of the "Jerry Can".....
The "Jerry Can" know as th
    e
Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister in Germany, was first developed in 1937 by Muller engineering in Schwelm, Germany,
It was designed by their chief engineer Vinzenz Grunvogel.  Designed as a fuel container, it became the primary container for fuel with the German Army
The Wehrmacht had specified that a soldier should be able to carry either 2 full containers or 4 empty ones,
which is the reason the triple handles were fitted on them.
The rectangular shape made it stackable an
d indentations help it resist damage and allow expansion and contraction due to temperature changes.
The recessed welded seam stiffened the container and protected the seam from impact damage.  The indentations also ensured that a full can
would not be severely damaged when falling from a vehicle, while a dip coat of paint (on early cans it was a red oxide paint) on the inside protected it from corrosion.
This container was far superior to any American, British or Soviet fuel container of that time and would later be copied by all of them and used world wide
The term "Jerry Can" came from "Jerry" being slang for Germans during WWII
You are bidding on an original German Early model German fuel can
Often called a "Jerry Can" this holds 20L or approximately 5.3 gallons of fuel
This can is marked on one side.....indented lettering that was part of the manufacturing process.....
    Treibstoff Feuergefährlich
Transulated from German......that is "Flammable Liquid"
This is being sold exactly as I found it in vintage used condition
This can shows plenty of signs of wear...dings, dents, rub marks, scuffs, scrapes, minor surface rust, dirt and stains
Paint is a military dark grey and is worn, scuffed and discolored in spots....all of which I think merely add to its character
You can see the outline of the word GASOLINE running vertically along the front edge (see pics)
(this is not painted on....it almost looks like it might have been letters that have long since been removed and left a darker looker underneath
Can sits flat on the ground but bottom does have several small dings and dents all along the edges along with some minor surface rust
Tank does NOT leak and there are no holes that I could detect.  There was a small amount of gasoline in this container when I found it.
Lid closes securely....rubber seal is still pliable but you may want to replace it at some point
It appears this container was one of the early ones that had the interior coated with red oxide paint to protect against corrosion
This would make a wonderful addition to someone's collection and/or an awesome mounted fuel can on a vintage vehicle or rat rod
